Using Talking Mats® to support client choice and voice
About the presenter
Rhonda qualified as an intellectual disability nurse in the UK in the 1990s. Since then, Rhonda has had a variety of roles supporting people with intellectual disabilities and in University education. Rhonda’s primary focus is how to improve the healthcare of people with intellectual disability with a focus on preventative health and addressing the social determinants of health.
About the presentation
In this presentation, Rhonda will provide an introduction to the use of Talking Mats® and demonstrate how this simple technology can be used to help people with intellectual disabilities make choices, show differentiation in their ideas and assist them to make sense of complex decisions.
Objectives
To understand:
• Talking Mats and how they can be used to develop an understanding of a person’s choices.
• Consider successful communication partnering with clients with an intellectual disability.
• Examples of application in nursing roles.
• How this topic may be relevant to your current area of practice.
