Professionalisation of nursing in intellectual and developmental disability in Australia

1960–2016

Dear PANDDA members

PANDDA and academics from Western Sydney University and University of Wollongong are conducting a study of nurses who have worked in the field of intellectual and developmental disability for many years. The aim of the study is to collect recollections from nurses working in the dynamic period 1960 – 2016 and to recognise and celebrate the positive contributions that nursing has made to the care of people with intellectual and developmental disability.

If you are a registered or enrolled nurse who has had 10 or more years’ experience working with people with intellectual and developmental disability between 1960 and 2016, they’d like to hear from you! You’ll be invited to participate in an interview with a member of the research team about your experiences of working with people with intellectual and developmental disability over the years with a particular focus on professional topics that were important during your time in practice – such as deinstitutionalisation, the transfer of nursing education into colleges and universities, and the creation and incorporation of PANDDA.

You can download a participant information sheet with all the details of the study below along with a consent form that you will be asked to sign if you agree to participate in an interview.

All you have to do to join the study is to contact Dr Peter Lewis in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Western Sydney University by phone (02 4570 1927) or email (p.lewis@westernsydney.edu.au). Dr Lewis will be happy to answer all your questions and to arrange a time and place to meet for an interview.
